Police in the US have confirmed they have found the remains of a six-year-old girl who vanished from her bedroom.

The disappearance of Isabel Celis in 2012 made international headlines and bore a chilling resemblance to the Maddie McCann case.

Her family in Tucson, Arizona, said she was last seen after being put to bed at 11pm on a Friday night.

Her dad called police after he found she wasn't in her bedroom the next morning.

For almost five years police had made no real progress in the case.

But at a press conference last night, Chief Chris Magnus dramatically confirmed that police had found human remains in a 'remote' area which were matched to Isabel via DNA analysis.

Chief Magnus would not offer any more information as to how police were led to the spot a month ago, except to say it was not 'happenstance'.

No arrests have been made and the Chief would not say if there were any suspects due to the ongoing investigation.

When Isabel first vanished, police said that there were 'suspicious circumstances around a possible entry point' at the family's home.

It had been rumoured that this related to evidence Isabel's bedroom window had been forced open.

It was also reported that a neighbour heard male voices and a dog barking at around 6.30am the morning of the disappearance.

Isabel's family released a statement last night saying: "We want to thank the community for the support they have continued to show for Isa over the years and for refusing to give up hope.

"Now is our time to mourn. We ask for privacy during this time so that we can do that."
