There is something a little peculiar about the “official” story that has been put forward by the McCanns of what happened on the night of their daughters “abduction”. What is even stranger though, is their behaviour since that fateful evening which has made me start to ask genuine questions as to whether they may have had more to do with their daughter disappearance than we are led to believe.
*Disclaimer – I know the McCanns are very adept in suing anyone that questions anything about the story they have put out. In-fact they have won over £½ million libel damages against several British newspapers which has resulted in the media avoiding printing stories that conflict with the official line that Madeleine has been abducted. We though are a patron for free speech so will not be silenced.
Since the night of the “abduction” The McCanns have spent a vast amount of time issuing legal threats and suing anyone that dares to ask questions about the case, most notably – Gonçalo Amaral, who published “The Truth Of The Lie”, which presented an alternative version of events based on his findings whilst he was Chief Inspector of the case. Gonçalo was removed from the investigation on 3rd October 2007, due to intense British government pressure.
This is not the first time that the parents of Madeleine, who disappeared in Praia da Luz in May 2007, has tried to silence the theories that contradict the version of events that they have released to the media. Kate and Gerry McCann have ordered their lawyers to advance with legal proceedings against numerous bloggers and the Sunday Times for suggesting they may have “hindered the investigation”, which is ironic as they only people who in my opinion have hindered the investigation is the McCanns themselves, as I shall discuss below.
I am not a “hater”, but I feel that all the evidence should be presented before you decide whether or not the “abduction” story stands up. The fact that many thousands of people have been misled in my opinion to donate to this cause is even more reason to ensure all the facts about the case are published.
It still surprises me despite there being over 700 kidnapping a day, just how much attention the McCanns have received from the media, fundraising and governments to help find their child? – Don’t get me wrong, its great that they have received the help, but I wonder whether it would have received the exposure it had if it wasn’t a white middle class family with a pretty, blond haired and blue eyed child?
Would the case have received so much attention if it was a “lower class” family who’s child went missing in a cheap resort in Benidorm for example? I can’t help but think if this was the case and the same evidence below was presented, the family would still be languishing in a Spanish jail for murder and the public’s reaction to the case from the start would have been much different.
Madeleine McCann was just a few days away from her 4th birthday on the night she disappeared as her parents Gerry and Kate were enjoying a tapas dinner at the clubs on-site restaurant, 50 meters away from their apartment. The McCanns have openly admitted to leaving their children un-attended at least 5-6 times during the holiday. On one occasion, they were called back to their apartment by hotel staff to attend to one of their children who had been crying out in distress for at least an hour and a quarter, apparently pleading: ‘Daddy, Daddy’.
Ultimately, whatever the cause of Madeleine’s disappearance I think it must be noted that Gerry and Kate have to accept they have failed in their responsibility as parents neglecting their children like this, which is a serious criminal offence under British law.
According to the first statements of the night in question, the McCanns had been ‘checking their children every hour’, then we heard ‘every 15 minutes’, and finally they settled on ‘every half hour’, despite there being no evidence to suggest they were checking on their children at all .
At 9.05, Gerry McCann says that “we went to check on his children and everything was fine”. As Gerry leaves the apartment he has a short conversation with Jeremy Wilkins as Jane Tanner (another member of “The Tapas 7) passes them within touching distance and claims to have seen a man carrying a child in his arms walking away from the apartment. Both Gerry and Jeremy did not say that they saw Jane which seems very strange considering they were facing the way she would have walked up to the apartment, and stranger still that Tanner would not acknowledge them as she walked past.

It was at 10pm when it was discovered by Kate McCann during another “check” that Madeline was missing, and immediately went back to the Tapas restaurant to raise the alarm, leaving her other two children still asleep in the room where an abductor could still be hiding, the windows and sliding door were still left open.

From this point on, Kate’s behaviour and the behaviour of the “Tapas 7” gets even stranger. The first thing Kate cried when she arrived back at the restaurant was ,“we let her down”, and immediately made the claim that Madeleine had been “Taken” before they returned to the apartment taking a strange route (below), before contacting the police. Madeleine had already been a mischievous child during the holiday, Gerry said in a statement that she had run out of the apartment earlier in the week and was found “hiding in the bushes” , so why was Kate so quick to make this assumption?
The black line, denotes the route from the Tapas bar to the patio door Gerry says they left unlocked. The red line, the route to the locked door, Gerry claims he and Kate used to check on Madeleine (we will see Kate’s version of events differ completely later). It beggars belief that the couple would take a route twice the distance to enter the apartment through a locked door, when the unlocked one was much closer?
Kate and Gerry have claimed that the fact that the window and the shutters to the children’s room were partly open, means that the abductor must have opened the window and the shutters (which the McCanns had left closed) from the inside, climbed through the window, and taken Madeleine back out through that window, but this story poses many problems.
For a start, the Portuguese police did a forensic examination of the window-sill, through which it is claimed that the abductor must have climbed out, with Madeleine. The Portuguese police said that they found no trace of any other person having made any impression on the window-sill. Moreover, in addition the lichen on the outside window-sill appeared to be totally undisturbed and only Kate McCann’s fingerprints were found on the window, no-one else’s. All of this tells us that the abductor, if indeed there ever was one, did not escape with Madeleine through the window.
Furthermore, the window is high enough in the children’s room to make it physically very difficult for an abductor to climb through it. It was reported to be 91cm. above the floor, exactly three feet. The abductor would therefore have had to climb three feet, with Madeleine in his arms or over his shoulder. In addition, he would have to have managed this feat without leaving any forensic traces on the window-sill. Madeleine must have weighed at least two stone so a task such as this would have meant balancing against the window frame itself, in which case traces of clothing fibres would have been found.
Even then, it would have been almost impossible to climb through this window even if Madeleine had been asleep. It is surely even more unlikely that the abductor could have laid Madeleine down on the floor or a bed in the children’s bedroom, then climbed out of the window, and then reached back inside the bedroom to pick Madeleine out of the room, all of this without Madeleine waking up?
The searches for Madeline continued over the next few weeks where leads went cold and more evidence was now being put forward to suggest that Kate and Gerry were the prime suspects and they were officially named “arguidos”, which prompted them to leave Portugal after Kate refused to answer 48 questions in relation to the disappearance, as reported in the Telegraph.
The 48 questions she refused to answer were;
1- On May 3 2007, around 22:00, when you entered the apartment, what did you see? What did you do? Where did you look? What did you touch?
2- Did you search inside the master bedroom wardrobe? (she replied that she wouldn’t answer)
3- (shown 2 photographs of her bedroom wardrobe) Can you describe its contents?
4- Why had the curtain behind the sofa in front of the side window (whose photo was shown to her) been tampered with? Did somebody go behind that sofa?
5- How long did your search of the apartment take after you detected your daughter Madeleine’s disappearance?
6- Why did you say from the start that Madeleine had been abducted?
7- Assuming Madeleine had been abducted, why did you leave the twins home alone to go to the ‘Tapas’ and raise the alarm? Because the supposed abductor could still be in the apartment.
8- Why didn’t you ask the twins, at that moment, what had happened to their sister or why didn’t you ask them later on?
9- When you raised the alarm at the ‘Tapas’ what exactly did you say and what were your exact words?
10- What happened after you raised the alarm in the ‘Tapas’?
11- Why did you go and warn your friends instead of shouting from the verandah?
12- Who contacted the authorities?
13- Who took place in the searches? 14- Did anyone outside of the group learn of Madeleine’s disappearance in those following minutes?
15- Did any neighbour offer you help after the disappearance?
16- What does “we let her down” mean?
17- Did Jane tell you that night that she’d seen a man with a child?
18- How were the authorities contacted and which police force was alerted?
19- During the searches, with the police already there, where did you search for Maddie, how and in what way?
20- Why did the twins not wake up during that search or when they were taken upstairs?
21- Who did you phone after the occurrence?
22- Did you call Sky News?
23- Did you know the danger of calling the media, because it could influence the abductor?
24- Did you ask for a priest?
25- By what means did you divulge Madeleine’s features, by photographs or by any other means?
26- Is it true that during the searches you remained seated on Maddie’s bed without moving?
27- What was your behaviour that night?
28- Did you manage to sleep?
29- Before travelling to Portugal did you make any comment about a foreboding or a bad feeling?
30- What was Madeleine’s behaviour like?
31- Did Maddie suffer from any illness or take any medication?
32- What was Madeleine’s relationship like with her brother and sister?
33- What was Madeleine’s relationship like with her brother and sister, friends and school mates?
34- As for your professional life, in how many and which hospitals have you worked?
35- What is your medical specialty?
36- Have you ever done shift work in any emergency services or other services?
37- Did you work every day?
38- At a certain point you stopped working, why?
39- Are the twins difficult to get to sleep? Are they restless and does that cause you uneasiness?
40- Is it true that sometimes you despaired with your children’s behaviour and that left you feeling very uneasy?
41- Is it true that in England you even considered handing over Madeleine’s custody to a relative?
42- In England, did you medicate your children? What type of medication?
43- In the case files you were forensic testing films, where you can see them marking due to detection of the scent of human corpse and blood traces, also human, and only human, as well as all the comments of the technician in charge of them. After watching and after the marking of the scent of corpse in your bedroom beside the wardrobe and behind the sofa, pushed up against the sofa wall, did you say you couldn’t explain any more than you already had?
44- When the sniffer dog also marked human blood behind the sofa, did you say you couldn’t explain any more than you already had?
45- When the sniffer dog marked the scent of corpse coming from the vehicle you hired a month after the disappearance, did you say you couldn’t explain any more than you already had?
46- When human blood was marked in the boot of the vehicle, did you say you couldn’t explain any more than you already had?
47- When confronted with the results of Maddie’s DNA, whose analysis was carried out in a British laboratory, collected from behind the sofa and the boot of the vehicle, did you say you couldn’t explain any more than you already had?
48- Did you have any responsibility or intervention in your daughter’s disappearance?
The only question she agreed to answer was;
Are you aware that in not answering the questions you are jeopardising the investigation, which seeks to discover what happened to your daughter?
Yes, if that’s what the investigation thinks.”
Why would she refuse to answer these questions? Surely her priority is to help find her child? To this day, Kate has refused to co-operate with Portuguese enquiries. Both Gerry and Kate also refused to take part in a lie detector test.
Gerry McCanns past is said to be somewhat disturbing. He was allegedly convicted for child abuses in 2002. A search of the child abuse register shows a registration number 19309 in the CATS system for a Gerald P Mccann, although the log records of this reference file have been deleted by someone who has access to the National Sex Offenders Register, namely Jim Gamble, the reference for this conviction still exists in the judicial reference files.
Whilst most of the evidence presented so far is circumstantial, the best piece of tangible evidence that links Gerry and Kate to the possibility of being involved in her murder was the cadaver dogs finding traces of blood on Kate’s clothes, Madeleine’s favourite soft toy Cuddle Cat, the wardrobe in Kate and Gerry’s bedroom, and also in their hire-car boot, which was taken out 25 days after her disappearance.
The cadaver dog’s that were used in the investigation have be used to successfully solve over 200 previously unsolved cases. They have a success rate of 100%.

The boot of the car had also been filled with trash and used diapers and was left open day and night after the disappearance, could this be an attempt by the McCanns to cause the cadaver smell to disappear?
“I drive down this street every day to turn my car around at that end and every time that I passed the house and I looked at the car, the car always had an open boot door, day or night. I often passed at night and always verified it. It was a fact, I reported it and that was it”.
This is the statement made by a lawyer, a very credible eyewitness, who lived in the same street as the McCann’s, when they moved to their villa.
The McCann’s relatives soon started to make claims that they had transported meat from the supermarket in July 2007, which had leaked blood in their car boot. Madeleine’s cuddly cat which was well publicised in the media was washed by her mother before being inspected by the police as well.
This interview is particularly revealing, and shows Gerry getting angry and storming out of an interview when fair and relevant questions about the discovery of blood in their apartment are posed to him;
The whole basis of the abduction claim, was made only on Jane Tanners rather vague and un-verified sighting of a man carrying a small girl.
The investigation became even more interesting when the McCann’s returned to the UK. The Smith family who were staying at the resort on the night of the abduction are watching TV and observe Gerry McCann alight the aeroplane and walk across the tarmac with a sleeping Sean in his arms. The father, Martin Smith, is shocked. He recognises the way the man turns his head down and the way the child is being held against the shoulder. It is exactly the same as the man he saw on the streets of Praia da Luz, four months earlier. Whilst their testimony is credible, given the lack of light in the area, they can’t identify the man who was carrying the child and this lead was never taken further.
What happened on the night, no-body will know for certain despite the damning evidence presented and the investigation is not being re-opened in Portugal so it’s unlikely Madeleine will ever be found and the perpetrator caught.The priority now for the McCanns seems to be suing anyone that questions their story. It’s fair to say they have done very well financially for someone who left their children unattended in a foreign country, but no amount of money will make them feel any better about the loss of their daughter.
In my opinion, Madeleine died in the apartment as a result of a tragic accident, possibly falling down some stairs, her parents panicked, hiding her body because they feared being blamed and then simulated an abduction fearing they were responsible for failing to care for their children. This would seem a much more plausible explanation than the one being presented.
