The Strange Case of Tony Blair, Gordon Brown and the McCanns

20 Apr, 2016  in Uncategorized by craig

I have a confession to make. Back in 2014 I posted that I was going to write something further on the subject of the McCanns. In the end I did not, because I was surprised by the strong emotional reaction I received, from a number of decent people, who were enraged that I might be prepared to write something not to the McCanns’ advantage. But I regret being so pusillanimous, particularly as so much discussion has been suppressed by the extremely aggressive stance taken on threats of libel action on this story.

So in the full knowledge that some decent people will be outraged, here it is.

This week there have been two more developments. The Home Office has announced that it will fund still further the police investigation into Madeleine’s disappearance, on which £10 million has already been spent. Plus the appeals court in Lisbon has overturned the libel verdict against the Portuguese detective Goncalo Amaral, who led the case and formed his own firm convictions at to what happened. The 500,000 euro libel award to the McCanns is now cancelled.

None of these sums of money would matter in the least, and practically nobody would grudge any expense, to have Madeleine McCann alive, safe and happy. There can be nothing worse for a parent than the loss of a child, whatever the circumstances. If the McCanns genuinely do not know what happened, that must be agonising beyond belief. My grandparents had a nineteen year old son, an uncle I never knew, missing in action in World War 2 and the pain never left them, even when his fate was resolved.

And yet, and yet… It is because our children are so precious to us that we treat them as such. I recall an incident on Jamie’s first birthday, which we spent in a hotel in Italy. I was in the room with Jamie. My then wife had gone out to the car. The birthday cake was delivered to reception and had to be paid for. Jamie was fast asleep. I dashed out of the hotel room, down two flights of steps to reception, literally threw the money at them and ran back up the stairs. I was away under two minutes but have never experienced such adrenalin, nor would wish to again. An overwhelming instinct had kicked in telling me I had done wrong in leaving the baby unattended, even so briefly.

I find the McCanns’ behaviour indefensible. There appears to be a disconnect in the public mind in the UK which prevents people from realising just how far the McCanns were from their children. This is a useful graphic just to see the layout, (do not worry about the other info on it).

The McCanns could not actually see their apartment from the tapas bar due to the wall around the pool. To get back there, they had to use the gate and walk around that wall, which made it a 75 yard hike. And the apartment had double doors onto the street on the opposite side of the block from that facing the pool.

I do not see how anybody understanding this geography can consider that it was normal parenting for the McCanns to leave two one year olds and a three year old, alone in the apartment in these circumstances – for hours, and repeatedly several days running. It is something I would absolutely never dream of doing with my own children. If nothing else, had any of the children been crying and in distress – and the chances of that with three tiny children are pretty high – there was no way they could hear them.

The claimed abduction is not the only thing that could have happened. Cholic. Vomiting. Sore nappies. Coughing. Choking. Bad dreams. Overheating. All kinds of thing can distress children. So far as I can judge, it is not that I am weird in my own views, rather it is absolutely accepted in British society that you do not leave 1 year olds without care of an adult. Why are the McCanns an exception?

Which leads me on to the question of why they received such exceptional treatment from British authorities, directed straight from No. 10, to the extent that Blair and Brown eventually gave them a PR representative? I used at one stage to be Resident Clerk in the FCO, a now abolished post effectively of night duty officer. I can tell you from horrible personal experience that the FCO deals with gut-wrenching cases of lost or dead children abroad frequently. I spent one of the most terrible three hours of my life, through to a cold dawn, on the phone with a hysterical bereaved mother desperate to explore any avenue that might give a possibility that the boy who had just drowned in Brazil was misidentified as her son. On average, I am afraid such tragedies get substantially less than 1% of the public resources that were devoted to the McCanns.

I am going to come straight out with this. British diplomatic staff were under direct instruction to support the McCanns far beyond the usual and to put pressure on the Portuguese authorities over the case. I have direct information that more than one of those diplomatic staff found the McCanns less than convincing and their stories inconsistent. Embassy staff were perturbed to be ordered that British authorities were to be present at every contact between the McCanns and Portuguese police.

This again is absolutely not the norm. On a daily basis more British citizens have contact with foreign authorities than the total staff of the FCO. It would be simply impossible to give that level of support to everybody. Plus, against jingoistic presumption, a great many Brits who have contact with foreign police are actually criminals.

The British Ambassador in Portugal, John Buck, had been my direct boss in the FCO. he was Deputy Head of Southern European Department when I was Head of Cyprus Section. He and his staff were concerned by contradictions in the McCann’s story. The Embassy warned, in writing, that being perceived as too close to the McCanns might not prove wise. They demanded the instruction from London be reconfirmed. It was.

I know of people’s misgivings because I was told directly. But material was also leaked to a Belgian newspaper confirming what I have said. It was published by the Express, but like so much other material which is not supportive of the McCanns, it got taken down. Fortunately that last link preserved it. It also shows that the FCO continues to refuse Freedom of Information requests for the material on the interesting grounds that it might damage relations with Portugal.

For the avoidance of doubt, I do not believe there was a high level paedophile ring involved. I make no such argument. Nor do I claim to know what happened to Madeleine McCann. But I do believe that the McCanns were less than exemplary parents. I believe that New Labour’s No.10 saw, in typical Blair fashion, a highly photogenic tragedy which there might be popularity in appearing to work on.

And I believe there is a genuine danger that the high profile support from the top of the British government might have put some psychological pressure on the Portuguese investigators and prosecuting officers in their determinations.

McCanns..checking or checkmate?

Video and Transcript

When we analyse the checking the McCanns supposedly did on their children on the night of the May 3rd...

...Some things don't appear to make logical sense

Let's remind ourselves of the supposed timeline...

OPRAH - "So let's go back to that night, 9:05, you were all at dinner, you you made the check at 9, so you're checking every half hour."

GERRY- "It was actually 9 o' clock, the whole group were in the restaurant and one of our friends Matt he went up and checked his daughter and as he came back I went up to check on Madeleine and the twins and I went into the apartment and we were really just checking to see if they're crying and the door..."

OPRAH- "Checking to see if there was any crying."

GERRY- "Yeah, and that was it and the door was open more, I'd left it just ajar, about 5 degrees and we checked on them before we left and they were sound asleep."

OPRAH- "Which door, you thought..."

GERRY- "This was the bedroom went..."

OPRAH- "This was about 9:05"

GERRY- "Just yeah, I went outside in a minute and it was one of the other guests, he was coming the other way, but he didn't actually cross the road to chat to me and we were sort of chatting for about 5 minutes and during that Jane went to check on her children, and it was at that point she was just past us going up to the corner and she saw a man carrying a young girl with, you know, she described independently the pyjamas that Madeleine had on and she didn't see the child's face, she didn't, you know, she saw me there, she'd seen that I'd just been in the apartment and at the time she thought there was something odd but it didn't raise enough alarm bells to challenge the person then"

OPRAH- "So you checked at about 9:05, another friend sees this man at 9:15 and you went back to check again at..."

KATE- "Well actually, 9:30 I stood up to go and check on Madeleine, it was my turn and at the same time Matt our friend stood up and we both started walking and he said, "I'm going to go and check on Grace" they were in the next apartment to us, I said "I'll check on Madeleine" and he hesitated a bit and he said "No, I'll check" so he went to check at half 9, came back and said "Fine, everything's fine" So then I went at 10 o'clock, the next check, erm..."

OPRAH- "Did he see her in the bed at 9:30?"

KATE- "No, he just went in and listened...no crying"

OPRAH- "So he came back and said 'everything's fine'. Everybody's just checking to see if there's crying, there's no crying, so everything's fine and so then you went at ten"

So roughly around the 9:00pm mark or so Matt, Gerry and Jane go SEPARATELY and check on their respective children.

It is therefore around this time they claim Madeleine was abducted based on what Jane supposedly saw outside.

At the 9:30 check Kate claimed she got up to check but Matt stood up at the same time and offered to check both apartments

Matt supposedly did not enter the bedroom and therefore did not notice that Madeleine was supposedly missing

We therefore now have three supposed facts we can analyse...

1) Gerry is basically claiming that the supposed abductor was probably in the apartment when he checked...

...because the bedroom door was opened more than he left it open before going out that night

Is it just an unlucky coincidence that he strangely ignored it and left or is the claim a lie to promote the abduction theory?

2) Jane is claiming she actually saw the abductor...

...Is it just unlucky coincidence that she strangely ignored it as she saw that Gerry had just checked his children?

Or is the claim a lie to promote the abduction theory?

3) Matt is claiming he just listened at the bedroom door on his 9:30 check

Is it just unlucky coincidence that Kate did not do the 9:30 check...?

...or is the claim a lie to create time for a supposed abductor to leave the area?

You could argue that all 3 supposed facts are unlucky coincidences that allowed an abduction to occur

Or you could argue that all 3 are lies that created the conditions for a fake abduction

But something is very strange about the whole supposed checking they all claim to have done

...so strange that it would qualify as circumstancial evidence to indicate that the checking story is a lie...

Fiona Payne confirmed to the police that the holiday was planned for ADULTS ONLY evenings

Fiona says they planned it so that the apartments were close to each other so they could supposedly check on their children...

...while the adults had a drink together on a balcony...

Well this group decided to enjoy themselves some distance from the apartments at the tapas bar

Which left them all some distance to walk to do their checks

Do you think that people who are enjoying adult time...

...people who are willing to leave their children alone and out of sight...

...people like the McCanns who are willing to leave virtual babies alone in an unlocked apartment...

...Don't you think that such people would also 'cut corners' in regards to the checking?

Remember this is the 5th night that they all left their children...

...Not the 1st - the 5th...

Is it therefore not logical well before the 5th night that if they were checking regularly as they claim...

...that they would arrange for ONE person on each check to do the checking of all apartments...

(especially as they were all next to each other)

...So they could more easily enjoy their 'adult' time together?

And yet we are expected to believe that every half hour or so, several different people, not at exactly the same time either...

...are still checking INDIVIDUALLY on their own children

THIS DOES NOT MAKE SENSE

Everything here that doesn't make sense rather strangely also creates the perfect conditions...

...for both an abduction to be CLAIMED, WITNESSED AND TIME CREATED FOR THE SUPPOSED ESCAPE FROM THE AREA

The McCanns are selling us all a supposed abduction that is completely contradicted by logical assessment of the facts

Are you buying what they're trying to sell you?

Maddie McCann abduction theories blasted by US crime expert

By Mark Saunokonoko

Crime 1:25am March 15, 2017

Scotland Yard has wasted almost $20 million investigating "ridiculous" theories that Madeleine McCann was abducted, according to a US criminal profiler.

Pat Brown, a profiler of cold cases in America and a regular guest on major US TV networks, said she was baffled by British police who failed to carry out a "proper investigation".

Operation Grange was launched by London Metropolitan Police in 2011, after Madeleine McCann vanished without trace from her family's Portuguese holiday apartment in May 2007.

The case, which continues to fascinate the world, remains unsolved.

"What Scotland Yard was doing was not a proper investigation," Brown told Nine.com.au.

"Scotland Yard went in saying the McCanns are not suspects, and that [the disappearance of Maddie] is an abduction. There is absolutely no way you should have entered an investigation saying that."

Scotland Yard is one of the world's most respected crime fighting agencies, making its approach doubly confusing, Brown said.

"Their focus has always been there was an abduction and we're going after a kidnapper."

Everyone, including parents Gerry and Kate, should have been suspects when Operation Grange was opened following a 2011 request by now British Prime Minister Theresa May, Brown said.

"They spent a tremendous amount of time following the most ridiculous leads ever. It was like watching a massive charade.

"To this day it's made no sense. They've spent an incredible sum of money going absolutely nowhere, coming up with absolutely nothing – not even a piece of evidence to add to the evidence we already know about."

This week Operation Grange was granted another $137,200 to cover operational costs through to September 17, a period that will include the 10th anniversary of Maddie's disappearance on May 3, 2007.

An unnamed source inside Operation Grange, which to date has been funded to the tune of $17.9m by the British government, claimed it was "a last throw of the dice".

Brown told Nine.com.au she believed Scotland Yard was handed a political football, where the results of the investigation did not matter.

The American profiler has spent countless hours poring over the entirety of official case files that were released by Portugal's Policia Judiciaria. She has also visited the town of Praia Da Luz.

Policia Judiciaria investigated the disappearance of Maddie, who would now be aged 13, between 4 May 2007 and 21 July 2008.

In September 2007 Gerry and Kate were sensationally named as 'arguidos' (a person being questioned under caution) by Portuguese police.

Goncalo Amaral, the detective who headed up the original investigation, claimed Gerry and Kate McCann covered up their daughter’s death in his book and a documentary.

The McCanns, who have always staunchly declared their innocence, last month lost their court battle to silence the former detective.

Brown met with Amaral while she was in Praia Da Luz, exploring key locations and surrounding areas relating to the case.

"There is evidence to lead one to believe the top theory should be Madeleine is dead," declared Brown.

She said, having looked at all the evidence, there was "zero sign of abduction".

Operation Grange has investigated theories involving child sex traffickers and Maddie's abduction by burglars or pedophiles.

The child trafficking theory was initially raised by private investigators hired by the McCanns in 2007.
