“Win the Crowd - and you will win your freedom.”

Gladiator.  2000
Proximo (Oliver Reed) to Maximus Decimus (Russell Crowe)

For 5 or 6 or 7 years the McCanns had the Crowd.
Money flowed in, they were applauded, invited to events, photographed, and appointed to meaningless positions.

The official stories, controlled by the combined forces of Bell Pottinger, Hanover,
the overt threats and intimidation from Carter-Ruck, and others,
the manipulation of public opinion by the Murdoch press, led by Lazzeri and Kandohla,
and the ever egregiously present Maximus Mendax Mitchell
left the Gutter press with no choice but to control the crowd, with their daily bread.

But then recently something changed.
After a long campaign in a foreign country, they lost in the Supreme Court.  (There is no higher Court in Portugal.)
They lost, and if the costs are enforced against them in full, will be impoverished.

They are beginning to lose the crowd.

As the Emperor Commodus found, you have to go with, you cannot go against.
He was faced with an opponent who had justice, honesty, truth and decency on his side.
So he lost the crowd, who understand that these ultimately are worth fighting for.

The mass media, The Sun, the Mail, and the Mirror are now openly hostile - using planted stories but crafting them in such a way that their intent is clear, and allowing unmoderated comments to stay on-line for days, possibly forever.

Commodus lost the crowd, and turned for protection to his Praetorian Guard.  They stood stock-still.

The McCanns have just lost Haysmacintyre, the company which knows more about the “Fund” than anyone else.
Carter-Ruck have been strangely quiet, ( though that may be merely quiescent if enough money could be pumped in their direction ).
Kennedy, Rowlings, Branson, and all the others who years ago attached their names to the story for their own personal gain are strangely quiet.
The Vatican ditched them a long time ago.  The Pope is head of the most sophisticated intelligence network in the world. That decision was not taken lightly.

When Commodus lost the Praetorian Guard, he knew he was finished.  The Guard did not intervene, they merely stood back and let the fight continue.

Are the McCanns losing their Praetorian Guard ?
